I think it’s up to your personal interpretation, to be honest! In the beginning, Shuya promises to protect Noriko in Yoshitokis place, who he knew would just want her safety. But throughout the film, the two very clearly grow closer! Whether it’s in love, or a close friendship, is up to the viewers.

Yes, of course! What you say makes perfect sense! I believe that a lot of people feel that way about the sequel. Since it’s not written by the original author, I simply like to think of it as an AU! I’m actually a big fan of the sequel when I look at it that way! I think it makes it a lot more enjoyable. I agree with you, however! If I had a headcanon about the aftermath of the original movie, it would definitely be much different!
